One of the world’s most recognisable skyline’s is about to get a little sharper.  The collection of infamous buildings that lay aside the Thames are bracing themselves for a new addition to their family. ‘The Shard’ designed by innovator Renzo Piano is set not only to become the tallest building in Britain but the highest standing in Western Europe.

Piano has described the piece as bearing resemblence to a ’shard of glass’ hence the name the Shard but it will be formally known as the London Bridge Tower. The structure is set to be coated in complex glazing and panes that will reflect the light and the changing patterns of the sky allowing the form to change with the weather and seasons. A place for the vast structure has been reserved in the London Bridge area and is set to come with major investment in the surounding area and the London Bridge Station.

The tower will play host to viewing galleries, hotels, apartments, spas, restaurants and of course offices, some have dubbed it a city within the city. With an estimated cost of £425 million the structure is set for completion in 2012. Olympic year will surely be special for London!
